How hard is the CRCST exam?

The CRCST pass rate was 65.6% in 2025. What that number says about difficulty, what it leaves out, and which domains to study first. Free mini quiz included.

The pass rate is public, and it moved

HSPA's statistics table for CRCST, as of December 31, 2025, shows 10,083 passes and 5,286 fails. That is 15,369 exams and a 65.6 percent pass rate. The same table for 2019 shows 6,416 passes and 1,873 fails, 8,289 exams, 77.4 percent. More people are testing, and a smaller share are passing.

A lower pass rate does not tell you the cut score, and HSPA does not publish a raw percent-correct cutoff. It does tell you that walking in on work experience alone is a weaker bet than it was a few years ago.

What actually makes items hard

The hard items are usually decisions: which Spaulding class a device falls into, what a failed Bowie-Dick test means for the day's loads, when a biological indicator holds a load, and whose instructions win when habit and the IFU disagree. The IFU wins for that device.

Hands-on hours still matter. Full CRCST requires 400 hours, and a provisional pass gives you six months to finish them. The exam does not replace that time in decontamination, assembly, and sterilization.

Common questions

What percentage do I need to pass?

HSPA has not published a raw percent-correct cut score. CRCST Practice readiness bands are study signals only.

Is the exam still 150 questions?

Yes. The 2026 certification handbook says 150 multiple-choice questions, three hours, of which 125 are scored and 25 are unscored pretest items.
