Provisional CRCST: pass first, hours within six months

Provisional CRCST means you passed the exam and have six months to document 400 hours of hands-on experience. What counts and who can sign the form.

Last reviewed November 4, 2026

Two ways to qualify

HSPA's CRCST page describes two paths. Full certification: document 400 hours of hands-on experience in the previous five years, then pass the exam. Provisional certification: pass the exam first, then submit the 400 hours within six months. Miss that window and the provisional certification is forfeited. A one-time two-month extension can be requested by the supervisor before the provisional period expires, for people already working or volunteering in an SPD.

You cannot sign off on your own hours. A lead, supervisor, manager, educator, or other person above you who watched the work has to complete the form. Technicians and private instructors cannot document hours.

Professional Development and Human Relation Skills

A candidate passes the CRCST before finishing the 400 hands-on hours and receives provisional certification. When must the hours be submitted?

Common questions

Do the hours have to be paid?

No. HSPA says hours can be paid or volunteer, in a sterile processing department. HSPA does not place you.

Does a prep course make me certified?

No. HSPA says courses prepare you for the exam only. Passing a course is not certification.
